About the Northfarthing

Welcome!  We’re so glad you’ve joined us in our adventure.  We wanted to share a little about what brings us here.

First, we are hobbits.  We love good food and cozy corners and fellowship with family and friends.  This is a big part of what launched us into farming.

Second, we are forgiven Christians, stewards in wonder at God’s intricate creation.  We have the best jobs in the world, as we get to watch the incredible ways God designed the world to work play out on a daily basis.  We are constantly learning something new and wonderful, whether about the powers of soil microbes, the incredible efficacy of herbal and homeopathic medical interventions, or the ways animal communities interact.

Third, we are truly beginning farmers.  While we have agriculture in our blood, neither of us grew up on farms.  We are teachers by training, farmers by love.  We are especially thankful to the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship Program and the wonderful master grazier we learned from for equipping us with a knowledge base to get started, adn we are always learning and trying new things.  One of the hidden benefits of starting with limited experience is that we don’t know what we “can’t” do – it’s exciting to see things work that made sense, but were different.  We are also blessed with beloved mentors who help ground us with practical commonsense, especially in areas that we are less versed in.

Finally, we are, in Wendell Berry’s words, a “potential family farm,” building on a legacy farm.  We love working with our children and continuing to build on the gift that we get to steward with the hope that they will choose to continue building this dream.  For more on the distinction between a family farm and a potential family farm, please see this post.
